Workshops
I offer a range of webinars and workshops on the psychology of climate change, disaster preparedness and recovery, and conflict resolution.
UNDERSTANDING THE PSYCHOLOGY OF CLIMATE CHANGE
A professional development workshop to help groups and organisations working on climate change to understand the psychological drivers of anthropological climate change, the social and psychological barriers to action, and key strategies from decades of psychological research into how people can engage themselves and support others to engage in effective action on climate change.
COPING WITH CLIMATE CHANGE
An experiential workshop to help people deal with grief and anxiety, come to terms with the climate emergency, and stay engaged in solutions. Participants will learn techniques for making room for painful and uncomfortable feelings about the climate emergency, free themselves from self-defeating thoughts and urges, and increase their capacity to be present and focus on what matters in the context of the climate emergency.
CULTIVATING HOPE IN THE TIME OF THE CLIMATE EMERGENCY
A workshop to help people cultivate a type of ‘active’ hope that is crucial for engaging in ongoing work and action in the face of the enormous environmental and societal challenge of climate change. We get that hope is a good thing to have, and that having no hope is pretty miserable, but why is hope useful, what exactly is it, and how can we cultivate hope on something like climate change without just being naïve, or underestimating the severity of the problem, or ‘brightsiding’? In this workshop we look at the elements of active hope, in which the person is realistic about the threats, sceptical about it turning out ok, accepts that there’s perhaps no reason to be optimistic, but is determined to go for it anyway and choose to do whatever she or he can to bring about the best possible outcome, because standing by is an unacceptable and unethical option.

TALKING WITH CHILDREN ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE
A workshop for parents and carers to help them to think through the impact of climate change on their children, cope with that knowledge themselves, whilst at the same time supporting their children to cope with climate change now and in the future. By attending this workshop participants will be able to:
Think through how they, as parents, can respond to the current reality of climate change and the threat of worse impacts to come.
Learn strategies for coping with the ‘uncomfortable truths’ of climate change.
Gather ideas about how to support their children to cope with it.
Learn about the skills and capacities that our children, the next generation, will need for engaging in efforts to restore a safe climate, and for adapting to the inevitable changes ahead.
PSYCHOSOCIAL RECOVERY FROM DISASTER
A community meeting, group session or workshop to help orient groups to the disaster context, help people to understand the personal and community impacts of these large scale disasters, and to discuss some of the best-practice information about how to help oneself and one’s family, friends and community to recover. This workshop would include information about psychological first aid, and coping strategies for dealing with disasters.

RESOLVING CONFLICT USING INTEREST BASED CONFLICT RESOLUTION
A one or two day workshop teaching people skills for resolving conflict between individuals that focuses on the interests of all the parties in the dispute. People are taught to examine the needs, wants, fears and concerns that underlie the preferred solutions over which they are disputing. By brainstorming a range of different solutions that address all of their interests, people are able to find solutions that meet the needs of all parties in the conflict. This workshop is run in collaboration with the Exploring Together Program.
CUSTOMISED WORKSHOPS
Workshops can be customised for your organisation or group’s needs.
